How It's Calculated
The overall band score is the average of the four section scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) rounded to the nearest half band. For example, 6.25 becomes 6.5, and 6.75 becomes 7.0.
Understanding Scores
IELTS scores range from 0 to 9. Most universities require 6.0-7.5. Band 9 is an expert user, Band 7 is a good user, Band 6 is a competent user, and Band 5 is a modest user.
CEFR Equivalents
IELTS scores map to CEFR levels: 4.0-5.0 (B1), 5.5-6.5 (B2), 7.0-8.0 (C1), 8.5-9.0 (C2). This helps compare IELTS with other language tests like TOEFL or Cambridge exams.
