DIRECTION OF COMMUNICATION

DIRECTION OF COMMUNICATION

Communication can flow vertically or laterally. The vertical dimension can be further divided into downward and upward direction.

A – VERTICAL DIRECTION

–          Downward communication flows from one level of a group or organization to a lower level within the group or organization. Example managers communicating with employees. It brings the WHY? In communicating

–          Upward communication flows to a higher level in the group or organization. It is use to provide feedback to higher-ups, inform them of the progress towards goals and relay current problems. Example from workers (employees) to senior managers.

B – LATERAL DIRECTION

When communication takes place among members of the same work groups, among members of the same work group at the same level, among managers of the same level, or among any other horizontally equivalent personnel, we called it lateral communication.
